On this Sunday we commemorate the 98th Anniversary of the founding of our church. On the 8th of October in 1922, the formal dedication of San Antonio Church took place as a much celebrated and historic day in South Fairmount. All of the new parishioners were happy to attend Mass as they said prayers for all the favors bestowed upon them. It was on this day in 1922 that Archbishop McNicholas officially placed the newly established San Antonio Church in the care of the Franciscan Order. As we come together for Mass on this Sunday, please say a prayer of thanks in memory of those Lick Run families who fought diligently to start their own church with the labors of the Sisters of Charity, Blandina, Justina and Euphrasia who helped them achieve their dream. We also remember all those Franciscan Fathers and Priests who were with us through our celebrations and sorrows in the early years. Although the are no longer with us, we feel their presence as we look forward to our 100th year in 2022.
Today, we also welcome guests to our 84th Annual Spaghetti Dinner. It is a little different this year with limited seating and drive thru orders as a way to serve those who make this a yearly tradition with their families and friends. There will be 4 different times to dine in with drive thru starting at 11:30 AM until 7:00 PM. Monday, October 12th we acknowledge Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas in 1492 and recognize the contributions of Americans of Italian descent. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and colonizer who, on behalf of Spain set sail across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a faster route to the Far East when he landed in the New World. The voyage on the Spanish Ships Santa Maria, Nina and La Pinta took 3 months and introduced the transfer of plants, animals, culture, human populations and technology from the New World and the Old World. The celebration of Christopher Columbus’s voyage has been recorded from as early as 1792, with Italian Americans observing the first Columbus Day on October 12, 1866 and the first Columbus Day Parade in San Francisco in 1869. Since 1989, October has been marked as Italian American Heritage Month and over the past 31 years, many honor their Italian Roots and the struggles their family members endured that connects their past with the future.
